Material Grades & Conditioning

PA6 / PA66 (Natural/Black)

The workhorse of engineering plastics. High toughness and impact resistance. Note: PA6 absorbs up to 8% moisture at saturation, which causes swelling.

  • Tensile Strength: ~80 MPa
  • Max Temp: 85°C – 100°C

Oil-Filled Nylon (Green/Yellow)

Internal lubricant reduces friction by 50% compared to standard Nylon. Ideal for high-load, low-speed pivot bushings where external greasing is difficult.

  • Lower stick-slip
  • Reduced water absorption

Design Risk Register

Risk Root Cause Mitigation Strategy Verification
Seizure Moisture absorption (Swelling) Increase running clearance by 2-3% of wall thickness. Conditioning soak test
ID Collapse Excessive press-fit interference Calculate “close-in” factor (usually 1:1 transfer). Go/No-Go Pin Gauge
Out-of-Round Clamping stress during machining Use piezo-chucks or split collets; anneal if needed. 3-Point Bore Micrometer

Specification Capability

OD Tolerance Range:
±0.05mm (Standard) to ±0.02mm (Precision)
ID Tolerance Range:

Manufacturing Routes

CNC Turning

Best for round bushings, flanged bushings, and washers. High speed, tight tolerance on OD/ID concentricity.

CNC Milling

Used for square blocks, wear pads, or bushings with non-circular features (flats, keyways).

Secondary Ops

Drilling cross-holes, tapping grease fittings, installing helical inserts, and spiral grooving for lubrication.

Common Applications

Heavy Equipment

Pivot bushings for excavators and loaders (replacing bronze).

Automation

Linear guides and wear pads for conveyor systems.

Marine

Rudder bearings and winch bushings (corrosion free).

FAQ: Custom Nylon Bushings

What is the difference between Cast and Extruded Nylon?

Cast Nylon has lower internal stress and better dimensional stability for large parts. Extruded Nylon is tougher and better for small, high-impact bushings.

How do you prevent Nylon bushings from swelling?

We can’t stop absorption, but we design for it. We calculate the expected moisture expansion and machine the initial clearance larger to compensate.

Can you machine internal grease grooves?

Yes. We machine spiral, figure-8, circular, and straight axial grooves to aid lubrication distribution.

Do you sell standard sizes like 1 inch ID?

No. We are a custom job shop. We make 1.000″ ID if you need it, or 1.005″ if you need that. Everything is made to order.

What is the max size you can machine?

We can turn Nylon bushings up to 500mm (20 inches) in diameter. Larger sizes may be possible with cast tube stock.

Is Nylon better than Acetal (POM)?

Nylon is tougher and handles abrasive dirt better (particles embed in the plastic). Acetal is better for wet environments as it doesn’t swell.

What colors are available?

Natural (White), Black (Moly filled), Blue (Cast), Green (Oil filled), and Yellow are common stock colors.

Can you hold ±0.001″ tolerance?

Yes, but only in climate-controlled conditions. We recommend specifying tolerances that account for thermal and moisture expansion in the field.

Do you offer First Article Inspection (FAI)?

Yes. We provide full AS9102 or standard FAI reports confirming all dimensions before full production.

What file formats do you accept?

We accept STEP, IGES, X_T (Parasolid), and PDF drawings for tolerancing.
