Engineering Plastic Comparison Matrix

Material Friction / Wear Chemical Resist Max Temp Cost Ideal For
Nylon (PA6/66) Good / Excellent Fair (Oil/Grease OK) ~90°C $ Heavy loads, pivots, cost-sensitive
Acetal (POM) Low / Good Good (Solvents OK) ~100°C $$ Wet environments, precision parts
PTFE (Teflon) Very Low / Poor (Creep) Excellent (Inert) ~260°C $$$ Chemical pumps, high temp
PEEK Good / Excellent Excellent ~250°C $$$$$ Extreme aerospace/oil & gas
UHMW-PE Low / Excellent Impact Good ~80°C $$ Abrasive media, chutes, liners

Application Scenarios

1

High Moisture / Washdown

Challenge: Standard Nylon swells and seizes the shaft.

Recommendation: Acetal (POM) or PET-P. These materials absorb negligible moisture (<0.2%) and maintain dimensional stability.

2

High Load & Vibration

Challenge: PTFE cold flows (deforms) under static heavy loads.

Recommendation: Oil-filled Nylon or Bronze-filled PTFE. For extreme shock loads, consider custom Polyurethane.

3

Chemical Exposure

Challenge: Solvents or acids attacking the bushing matrix.

Recommendation: PTFE or PEEK. Always check chemical compatibility charts against your specific fluid.

Quality Assurance & Traceability

Material Verification

We don’t guess. We verify raw material resin types to ensure you get genuine PEEK, Delrin, or Virgin PTFE, not cheap substitutes.

Dimensional Reports

Every batch comes with an inspection report. For critical features, we provide 100% inspection data points.

Full Traceability

Lot numbers are tracked from resin pellet/rod to finished part. We archive records for 5+ years.

Common Failure Modes & Mitigations

Stick-Slip (Squeaking)

Occurs when static friction is much higher than dynamic friction. Fix: Switch to internal lubricant filled grades (e.g., Oil-filled Nylon, PTFE-filled Acetal).

Thermal Seizure

Bushings seize on the shaft as they heat up. Fix: Increase running clearance. Plastics expand 10x more than metals.

Cold Flow (Creep)

Permanent deformation under constant load. Fix: Reduce load, increase wall thickness, or switch to a higher compressive strength material (PEEK, Reinforced Nylon).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a catalog of standard sizes?

No. Rapidaccu is strictly a custom manufacturer. We make bushings to your specific dimensions and tolerances. We do not stock standard parts.

What is the best plastic for high load applications?

For high static loads, PEEK or Glass-Filled Nylon are best due to their high compressive strength and creep resistance. Bronze-filled PTFE is also good for sliding loads.

Can plastic bushings run without lubrication?

Yes, most engineering plastics (PTFE, Nylon, Acetal) are self-lubricating. However, adding initial grease or oil usually extends service life and reduces noise.

How do you control moisture absorption in Nylon?

We can’t change the material’s nature, but we can design for it by increasing clearances. Alternatively, we suggest switching to Acetal (POM) or PET-P which absorb very little moisture.

What tolerances can you hold on plastic bushings?

Typically ±0.05mm (0.002″). With climate control and stable materials like PEEK or POM, we can achieve ±0.01mm-0.02mm. PTFE requires looser tolerances due to high CTE.

Can you machine undercut features?

Yes, our multi-axis CNC lathes can machine internal grooves, O-ring seats, and snap-fit undercuts.

What is the maximum operating temperature?

It depends on the material. UHMW (~80°C), Nylon (~100°C), Acetal (~100°C), PTFE (~260°C), PEEK (~260°C).

Do you offer FDA compliant materials?

Yes, we can machine bushings from FDA-compliant grades of Acetal, PTFE, and PEEK for food and medical applications.
