Flange as Axial Stop &
Load Distributor
We manufacture custom flanged bushings to your exact drawing specifications. Designed to handle combined radial and axial loads while simplifying assembly retention.
Load Path & Functionality
Radial Load
Primary load supported by the bushing body (OD/ID interface). Requires precise clearance control.
Axial Load (Thrust)
Axial forces absorbed by the flange face against the housing, preventing pull-through.
Moment & Alignment
Flange acts as a squaring face to ensure perpendicularity and resist tilting moments.
Flange Geometry Overview
Critical Dimensions
Figure 1: Typical custom flanged bushing geometry showing Flange Thickness (T), Flange OD (F), Body OD (D), Length under Flange (L), and ID.
Configuration Matrix
| Flange Type | Shoulder Profile | Anti-Rotation | Groove Options | Recommended Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard / Thick | Straight / Undercut | Press Fit Only | Internal Spiral / None | Heavy axial loads, pivots. |
| Thin / Washer | Precision Ground | Pin Hole / Flat | Face Grooves | Space-constrained thrust surfaces. |
| Square / Rectangular | Chamfered | Bolt Holes | Cross Hatch | Linear guides, non-rotating mounting. |

Assembly & Retention Strategies
Choosing the right fit is critical for flanged bushing performance. The flange acts as a positive stop, simplifying axial positioning.
| Fit Type | Defining Inputs | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Press Fit | Housing bore tolerance, thermal expansion. | Permanent retention, max load capacity. |
| Slip Fit | Clearance gap, lubrication type. | Easy replacement, hand assembly. |
| Shoulder Stop | Flange thickness, shaft length. | Axial positioning, thrust bearing. |

Flanged Bushing FAQ
How do I size the flange for my axial load?
Flange surface area should be calculated based on the maximum axial thrust and the material’s compressive strength (PV limit). We can assist with these calculations during DFM.
Can you add anti-rotation features?
Yes, we can machine flats on the flange, drill pin holes, or add knurling to the body to prevent rotation within the housing.
What groove designs do you offer?
We offer figure-8, double-loop, circular, and straight axial grooves. Grooves can be on the ID, OD, or flange face depending on lubrication needs.
What tolerances can you hold?
We typically hold ±0.01mm (0.0005″) for precision ground diameters. Tighter tolerances are available upon review of the specific material and geometry.
How should I specify assembly fit?
Specify the mating housing bore and shaft OD. We will machine the bushing to provide the desired press fit (interference) or slip fit (clearance).
Do you machine plastic flanged bushings?
Yes, we machine Nylon, Delrin, PTFE, PEEK, and other engineering plastics, often used for their self-lubricating and corrosion-resistant properties.
What surface finishes are standard?
Standard turned finish is Ra 1.6µm (63µin). Precision grinding can achieve Ra 0.4µm (16µin) or better for demanding bearing surfaces.
How do you ensure concentricity?
We machine the OD and ID in a single chucking setup whenever possible to maximize concentricity and minimize runout.
What is your lead time?
Standard lead time is 3-4 weeks. Expedited services (1-2 weeks) are available for urgent requirements depending on material stock.
Do you have an MOQ?
We don’t have a strict MOQ, but setup costs make low quantities (under 10-20) more expensive per unit. We specialize in custom batches.
