Frequently Asked Questions

Which stainless steel grade should I choose?

316L is most common offering excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility for medical and marine applications. 304L provides good general corrosion resistance for food processing and architectural use. 17-4PH offers higher strength through heat treatment for aerospace and high-stress applications. We help select the optimal grade for your requirements.

Is stainless steel 3D printing suitable for medical implants?

Yes, 316L stainless steel is biocompatible and widely used for medical implants and surgical instruments. We manufacture medical-grade stainless steel parts with ISO 13485 certification, full material traceability, and compliance documentation required for medical devices.

What surface finishes are available?

We offer as-printed, bead blasted, machined, polished (mirror finish), electropolished, and passivated surfaces. For medical applications, electropolishing provides superior corrosion resistance and cleanability. We can achieve Ra values from 6.3 to 0.4 microns depending on finishing requirements.

Can stainless steel parts be heat treated?

Yes, we offer various heat treatments. 316L and 304L receive stress relief annealing. 17-4PH can be precipitation hardened to achieve strengths up to 1300 MPa. Solution annealing improves corrosion resistance. Heat treatment selection depends on grade and desired properties, with certification provided.

What tolerances can you achieve?

Our stainless steel 3D printing achieves ±0.1mm to ±0.2mm tolerances depending on geometry. For critical features, precision machining can achieve ±0.01mm tolerances. We provide detailed inspection reports with CMM measurements for critical dimensions and full material certifications.

How does 3D printed stainless steel compare to wrought?

3D printed 316L achieves mechanical properties comparable to wrought material after heat treatment. The additive process enables complex internal geometries impossible with traditional manufacturing. While surface finish differs initially, post-processing achieves similar aesthetics. Grain structure is finer, which can enhance certain properties.
