How Multi Jet Fusion Works

MJF is an advanced powder bed fusion technology that uses HP’s proprietary agents and infrared energy to fuse nylon powder with exceptional speed and quality.

1

Powder Spread

Thin layer of PA12 powder spread across bed

2

Agent Jetting

Fusing and detailing agents precisely deposited

3

Energy Application

IR lamps fuse powder where agents applied

4

Layer Repeat

Process repeats for each layer

5

Extraction

Parts cool and excess powder removed

MJF vs. Traditional SLS

Multi Jet Fusion

  • Faster: Up to 10x production speed vs. SLS
  • Better Detail: 80μm pixel vs. 100-150μm laser spot
  • Isotropic: Consistent properties in all directions
  • Smoother: Reduced orange-peel texture
  • No Supports: Self-supporting in powder bed

Traditional SLS

  • Slower processing per layer
  • Larger laser spot size limits detail
  • Can have directional strength variation
  • More visible layer lines
  • Also support-free

MJF Material: PA12 Nylon

HP’s PA12 (Polyamide 12) is an engineering-grade nylon specifically formulated for MJF printing. It combines excellent mechanical properties with chemical resistance, making it suitable for functional prototypes and end-use parts.

Mechanical Properties

  • Tensile Strength: 48 MPa
  • Elongation at Break: 20%
  • Flexural Modulus: 1700 MPa
  • Impact Strength: 5 kJ/m²

Thermal Properties

  • Melting Temp: 172-180°C
  • HDT @ 0.45 MPa: 169°C
  • Use Temp: -40 to 80°C
  • Coefficient: Low expansion

Other Properties

  • Density: 1.01 g/cm³
  • Water Absorption: Low
  • Chemical Resist: Excellent
  • Color: Natural gray/black

Ideal For

  • • Functional prototypes requiring strength
  • • End-use parts for low-medium volume
  • • Snap-fit assemblies and living hinges
  • • Chemical resistant components
  • • Gears, brackets, housings, fixtures

Considerations

  • • Not suitable for extreme temperatures
  • • Slight porosity (not watertight)
  • • UV exposure causes degradation
  • • Gray color standard (dyeing available)
  • • Hygroscopic (absorbs moisture)

Key Advantages of MJF

High Productivity

Faster than SLS with full bed utilization. Multiple parts print simultaneously without quality compromise. Ideal for batch production.

Consistent Quality

Uniform mechanical properties throughout part. Minimal variation between builds. Predictable performance for production.

Fine Details

80 micron pixel resolution captures intricate features. Thin walls down to 0.5mm. Sharp edges and text reproduction.

Isotropic Strength

Equal mechanical properties in X, Y, and Z axes. No weak layer bonding. Reliable performance regardless of orientation.

Mechanical Strength

PA12 nylon offers excellent toughness and impact resistance. Suitable for functional parts and snap-fits. Fatigue resistant.

Better Surface

Smoother than SLS with reduced layer lines. Less post-processing required. Accepts dyeing, painting, and coatings.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How does MJF compare to SLS in terms of part quality?

MJF produces parts with finer detail (80μm vs. 100-150μm), smoother surface finish, and more consistent mechanical properties than traditional SLS. The technology enables faster production while maintaining or exceeding SLS quality standards. Parts have true isotropic strength without directional weaknesses.

Can MJF parts be dyed or painted?

Yes, MJF PA12 accepts dyeing and painting very well. The material can be dyed to various colors including black, providing uniform color penetration. We also offer painting, powder coating, and other surface treatments. The smoother surface finish compared to SLS requires less preparation before finishing.

What is the maximum part size for MJF?

Our HP MJF systems accommodate parts up to 380 × 284 × 380 mm (15 × 11.2 × 15 inches). Larger parts can be designed as assemblies with interlocking features or snap-fits. The build volume allows efficient nesting of multiple parts for batch production.

    Are MJF parts watertight?

MJF parts have some porosity and are not completely watertight in their as-printed state. For applications requiring liquid or gas sealing, we can apply infiltration treatments, coatings, or use gaskets. The porosity is minimal and doesn’t affect structural integrity for most applications.

Can threaded features be printed directly?

Yes, threads M6 and larger can be printed directly with MJF. Threads may require cleaning to remove powder residue and light chasing for optimal fit. For critical threads or sizes below M6, we recommend designing undersized holes for post-tapping. Thread quality is superior to SLS due to finer resolution.

Is MJF suitable for production volumes?

Absolutely. MJF is designed for both prototyping and production. The technology’s speed and consistency make it economical for low to medium volume production (1-10,000+ units). Part-to-part consistency is excellent, and we can scale production across multiple machines as needed. No tooling required.
