FDM 3D Printing

What is FDM 3D Printing?

Fused Deposition Modeling is an additive manufacturing process that builds parts layer by layer using heated thermoplastic filament. The material is extruded through a nozzle and deposited onto a build platform, creating strong, functional parts.

Layer-by-Layer Building

Thermoplastic material is heated to melting point and precisely deposited in thin layers to build your part from bottom to top.

Cost-Effective Solution

Lower equipment and material costs make FDM ideal for rapid prototyping and small batch production runs.

Engineering Materials

Wide range of materials including ABS, PLA, PETG, Nylon, and high-performance polymers for various applications.

FDM Material Options

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

Impact-resistant, durable thermoplastic ideal for functional prototypes and end-use parts.

Temperature resistance: -20°C to 80°C

PLA (Polylactic Acid)

Eco-friendly, biodegradable material with excellent surface finish for conceptual models.

Ideal for: Visual prototypes, displays

PETG

Strong, chemical-resistant material combining ease of printing with mechanical durability.

Features: Chemical resistance, toughness

Nylon (Polyamide)

High strength-to-weight ratio with excellent wear resistance for functional components.

Applications: Gears, brackets, fixtures

Design Considerations

Recommended

  • • Minimum wall thickness: 1.0mm
  • • Support structures for overhangs >45°
  • • Round edges for better strength
  • • Orient parts to minimize supports

Limitations

  • • Visible layer lines on surfaces
  • • Anisotropic strength properties
  • • Lower dimensional accuracy than SLA
  • • Support removal may leave marks

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order quantity for FDM printing?

We have no minimum order quantity. Whether you need a single prototype or multiple production parts, we can accommodate your requirements. FDM is particularly cost-effective for low to medium volume runs.

How strong are FDM printed parts?

FDM parts can be quite strong depending on material choice and print orientation. ABS and Nylon offer excellent mechanical properties. Parts are strongest in the XY plane and weaker in the Z direction due to layer bonding. Proper orientation is crucial for load-bearing applications.

Can I get a smooth surface finish with FDM?

FDM parts have visible layer lines as printed. We offer post-processing services including sanding, vapor smoothing, and painting to improve surface finish. For ultra-smooth surfaces, consider SLA printing as an alternative technology.

What file formats do you accept?

We accept STL, OBJ, STEP, and IGES formats. STL is preferred for 3D printing. Please ensure your files are watertight with no errors. Our team will review your files and notify you of any issues before production begins.

Do you offer color options for FDM parts?

Yes, we stock common colors in most materials including natural, black, white, and various colored filaments. Custom colors may require longer lead times. We also offer painting services for specific color matching requirements.

Can FDM parts be used outdoors?

Material selection is critical for outdoor use. ABS and ASA offer good UV resistance and weatherability. PLA degrades with UV exposure. We recommend UV-resistant materials and protective coatings for long-term outdoor applications. Contact us for specific material recommendations.
