What Is a Chrome Plated Roller?

A chrome plated roller is a precision cylindrical roll whose outer surface has been electroplated with a layer of hard chromium. The chrome layer — typically 0.05 mm to 0.5 mm thick — delivers exceptional hardness, corrosion resistance and a mirror-like finish that dramatically reduces friction and extends service life compared with uncoated steel rolls.

Superior Hardness

Hard chrome achieves 65–70 HRC — far harder than most engineering steels — resisting wear, scratching and surface damage under heavy industrial loads.

Corrosion Resistance

The dense chrome layer forms a passive oxide barrier, protecting the roll body from moisture, acids, alkalis and industrial chemicals.

Mirror-Finish Surface

Post-plating grinding and super-finishing achieve Ra values as low as 0.02 μm, essential for film extrusion, lamination and precision web handling.

Low Friction

Chromium’s naturally low coefficient of friction reduces drag, energy consumption and heat generation in high-speed web and film production lines.

Rebuilding & Re-plating

Worn chrome rolls can be stripped, re-ground and re-plated to original dimensions — making chrome the most cost-effective long-term surface treatment for rollers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about custom chrome plated rollers

What is the difference between hard chrome and decorative chrome on rollers?

Hard chrome (industrial chrome) is deposited in a thick layer (0.05–0.5 mm) directly onto the steel substrate, achieving 65–70 HRC hardness for wear, corrosion and friction resistance. Decorative chrome is a very thin flash (0.0003–0.001 mm) applied over a nickel layer primarily for appearance, offering only mild corrosion protection. For industrial roller applications, hard chrome is almost always required.

How smooth can you achieve a chrome plated roller surface?

After post-plating cylindrical grinding and lapping/super-finishing, we can achieve Ra values as low as 0.02 μm (mirror finish) on hard chrome rollers. Standard precision-ground finish is Ra 0.1–0.4 μm. Matte or satin finishes (Ra 0.8–1.6 μm) are also available for applications where grip or controlled friction is required. The surface roughness is verified with a calibrated Mahr profilometer.

Can you re-plate an existing chrome roller instead of making a new one?

Yes. We offer a full rebuild and re-plating service. The worn chrome is chemically stripped, the base metal is inspected and re-ground to remove fatigue damage, and a fresh chrome layer is deposited to restore the roll to its original dimensions and surface quality. Re-plating typically costs 40–60% less than a new roller and is recommended where the core is in good condition. Send us your worn roll for a free assessment.

What base material is best for a chrome plated printing roller?

For high-speed printing rolls, alloy steel (42CrMo) or hardened carbon steel (45#) provides the rigidity and core strength to prevent deflection under printing pressure. The chrome surface then delivers the required hardness (65–70 HRC), low friction and mirror finish (Ra 0.02–0.2 μm) needed for sharp ink transfer and consistent nip pressure. For lightweight high-speed applications, aluminium with hard chrome is an excellent option.

What tolerance can you hold on a chrome plated roller diameter?

Standard tolerance is ±0.01 mm on the finished chrome surface after post-plating grinding. For precision-grade applications such as film calenders, printing presses or semiconductor equipment, we can achieve ±0.005 mm. Cylindricity is held to 0.005–0.015 mm depending on roll length. All final dimensions are verified by CMM with full inspection reports provided.

How long does it take to manufacture a custom chrome plated roller?

Standard lead time is 2–4 weeks from approved drawing, covering CNC turning, pre-plating grinding, electroplating, post-plating grinding and final inspection. Complex rolls with internal cooling channels, large diameters (500+ mm) or precision grade tolerances may require 4–6 weeks. Rush manufacturing (7–10 days) is available for urgent replacement rolls — please advise at time of enquiry.

Can chrome plated rollers be combined with internal water cooling?

Absolutely. Rapidaccu manufactures chrome-plated chill rollers with internal spiral water channels for rapid product quenching in film extrusion and lamination lines. The water channel is precision-machined in the roller body before plating, and the chrome surface is then applied to deliver the required surface hardness, smoothness and corrosion resistance. Rotary unions for cooling water connection are also supplied or specified on request.

What information do I need to provide to get a quote?

To prepare an accurate quotation we need: (1) roller diameter and face length; (2) chrome layer thickness or intended service life; (3) required surface finish (Ra value or description); (4) base material preference or application environment; (5) shaft end configuration and mounting details; (6) quantity and delivery schedule. A technical drawing or sample is ideal but not mandatory — our engineers can work from a basic description to produce a drawing for your approval.
