Engineered for Lightness & Precision

As a specialized custom aluminum bushings manufacturer and supplier, Rapidaccu bridges the gap between rapid prototyping and high-precision production. Aluminum bushings offer an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, making them ideal for aerospace, automotive, and high-speed automation machinery where every gram counts. We don’t stock standard sizes; we engineer your specific geometry into reality.

Alloys & Surface Treatments

Material selection is critical for performance. We primarily machine 6061-T6 for general-purpose structural bushings and 7075-T6 for high-stress applications requiring strength comparable to some steels.

Alloy Characteristics Typical Application
6061-T6 Excellent corrosion resistance, weldable, versatile. Automation spacers, mounting bushings.
7075-T6 High strength, harder, lower corrosion resistance than 6061. Aerospace pivots, high-load suspension.
2024-T3 High fatigue resistance, excellent machining. Aircraft structures, tension members.

Anodizing Options: Clear, Black, Blue, Red, Gold (Type II) and Hardcoat (Type III).

Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)

Concentricity & Runout

For rotating applications, concentricity between ID and OD is vital. We aim for < 0.001″ TIR standard, ensuring smooth operation and minimal vibration at high speeds.

Dimensional Accuracy

Using high-precision turning centers, we hold diameters to +/- 0.0005″. Air gaging is utilized for bore verification to ensure perfect fitment with mating shafts.

Perpendicularity

Flange faces are machined perpendicular to the bore axis to ensure flush mounting. This prevents misalignment loads that can prematurely wear out the system.

Visualizing Precision

The image illustrates the complexity we handle. From internal grooving for lubricant retention to complex chamfers for automated assembly insertion, every feature is machined with intent.

  • Complex Geometries: Internal grooves, cross-holes, and varying wall thicknesses.
  • Surface Finish: Ra 32 or better on sealing surfaces.
  • Edge Control: All sharp edges broken 0.005″-0.015″ unless otherwise specified.

Capability Specification

Feature Specification / Capability Inspection Method
Outer Diameter (OD) 0.125″ to 12.000″ (3mm – 300mm) Laser Micrometer / CMM
Inner Diameter (ID) 0.060″ to 11.500″ (1.5mm – 290mm) Air Gage / Bore Gage
Length Up to 24.000″ (600mm) Calipers / Height Gage
Standard Tolerance +/- 0.001″ (0.025mm) Standard Metrology
Precision Tolerance +/- 0.0002″ (0.005mm) Temperature Controlled Lab
Surface Roughness Ra 16 – Ra 125 (As Machined) Profilometer

Surface Integrity & Workmanship

Toolpath & Finish

The surface finish of an aluminum bushing directly affects the life of the mating shaft. We utilize high-positive rake polished inserts designed for aluminum to prevent material buildup on the tool edge (BUE). This results in a mirror-like sheen and consistent Ra values, reducing initial wear during the break-in period.

Burr Control & Edge Breaks

Aluminum is ductile and prone to burrs. We employ a rigorous deburring process:

  • In-Machine Deburring: Using specialized tools to chamfer edges during the cycle.
  • Thermal Deburring: For complex internal intersecting holes.
  • Tumbling: Ceramic media tumbling for a uniform matte finish and edge rounding.

DFM: Understanding Cost Drivers

Wall Thickness

Extremely thin walls (< 1mm) require slow machining and custom fixtures to prevent crushing, increasing cost.

L/D Ratio

Deep bores (Length > 3x Diameter) require specialized boring bars and slower speeds to avoid chatter.

Tolerances

Tightening tolerances from +/- 0.005″ to +/- 0.0005″ can triple the machining time and inspection costs.

Finishing

Hardcoat anodizing is more expensive than standard Type II. Masking specific areas also adds labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What aluminum alloys do you use?

We primarily use 6061-T6 and 7075-T6. We can also source 2024, 5052, and MIC-6 tooling plate.

Do you offer anodizing?

Yes, Type II (Standard) in various colors and Type III (Hardcoat) for wear resistance.

What are your standard tolerances?

Standard is +/- 0.005″, but we routinely hold +/- 0.0005″ for precision features.

Can you handle low volume?

Yes, we specialize in high-mix, low-volume production, starting from 1 piece.

How do you prevent burrs?

We use sharp carbide tools, specific toolpaths, and manual/tumble deburring processes.

What is the lead time?

Typically 10-14 days. Expedited options (3-5 days) are available for urgent needs.

Do you provide material certs?

Yes, Mill Certs and Certificates of Conformance (CoC) are available upon request.
