Titanium Sheet Metal Fabrication

Why Titanium is Exceptional

Titanium offers a unique combination of properties unmatched by other materials

Lightweight Champion

45% lighter than steel with equivalent strength. Exceptional strength-to-weight ratio reduces overall system weight in aerospace and automotive applications.

High Strength

Tensile strength comparable to high-strength steels. Maintains mechanical properties across temperature extremes from cryogenic to 600°C.

Corrosion Immune

Outstanding resistance to seawater, acids, and chlorides. Passive oxide layer forms instantly providing superior protection in harsh environments.

Biocompatible

Non-toxic and hypoallergenic properties. Perfect for medical implants and surgical instruments with excellent tissue compatibility and osseointegration.

Temperature Stable

Retains strength in extreme temperatures. Low thermal expansion coefficient ensures dimensional stability across thermal cycling.

Non-Magnetic

Paramagnetic properties ideal for MRI equipment and magnetic field-sensitive applications. No interference with electronic instruments.

Fatigue Resistant

Excellent fatigue strength under cyclic loading. High endurance limit makes it ideal for components subjected to repeated stress.

Low Density

Density of only 4.5 g/cm³ compared to steel’s 7.8 g/cm³. Significant weight savings without compromising structural integrity.

Titanium Alloy Grades & Specifications

We fabricate a comprehensive range of commercially pure and alloyed titanium grades

Grade 1 (CP Ti)

Purity: 99.5% Titanium

Strength: 35 ksi yield

Most ductile and formable commercially pure titanium. Excellent corrosion resistance with good cold formability. Lower strength compared to other grades.

Applications: Chemical processing equipment, heat exchangers, desalination plants, hydrometallurgical applications

Grade 2 (CP Ti)

Purity: 99.2% Titanium

Strength: 50 ksi yield

Most commonly used commercially pure titanium. Excellent balance of strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance. Industry standard for general applications.

Applications: Aerospace airframes, chemical tanks, marine components, architectural panels, medical equipment

Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V)

Composition: 6% Al, 4% V

Strength: 130 ksi yield

Most widely used titanium alloy. Highest strength-to-weight ratio of all titanium grades. Excellent high-temperature properties up to 400°C. Heat treatable for enhanced properties.

Applications: Aerospace structures, jet engine components, turbine blades, racing components, prosthetic implants

Grade 7 (Ti-Pd)

Addition: 0.12-0.25% Pd

Strength: 50 ksi yield

Commercially pure titanium with palladium addition for superior corrosion resistance. Immune to crevice corrosion in reducing acid environments.

Applications: Chemical processing, sour gas service, geothermal power plants, pollution control equipment

Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI)

Extra Low Interstitial

Strength: 120 ksi yield

Medical grade titanium with reduced oxygen, nitrogen, and iron content. Enhanced ductility, fracture toughness, and biocompatibility. FDA approved for implants.

Applications: Medical implants, surgical instruments, orthopedic devices, dental implants, spinal fusion cages

Advanced Fabrication Processes

Laser & Waterjet Cutting

Fiber laser for clean cuts without contamination. Waterjet cutting prevents heat-affected zones and maintains material properties throughout.

Precision Forming

Controlled forming processes account for titanium’s springback characteristics. Specialized tooling prevents galling and surface damage.

Inert Gas Welding

TIG welding with argon shielding prevents oxidation and embrittlement. Certified welders ensure aerospace-quality weld integrity.

CNC Machining

Advanced machining strategies for titanium’s low thermal conductivity. Sharp carbide tooling and optimized parameters prevent work hardening.

Surface Treatment

Anodizing for color coding and enhanced corrosion resistance. Pickling and passivation for medical-grade surface cleanliness.

Quality Assurance

Non-destructive testing including X-ray and ultrasonic inspection. Complete material traceability and certification documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is titanium more expensive than other metals?

Titanium’s higher cost stems from complex extraction processes, difficult machining characteristics requiring specialized tooling, and lower production volumes compared to steel or aluminum. However, its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance often provide superior lifecycle value despite higher initial costs.

Which titanium grade should I choose?

Grade 2 suits general applications requiring corrosion resistance. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) offers maximum strength for aerospace and performance applications. Grade 23 is required for medical implants due to enhanced biocompatibility. Our engineers can recommend the optimal grade based on your specific requirements.

Can titanium be welded reliably?

Yes, titanium welds excellently using TIG welding with proper inert gas shielding. The key is preventing atmospheric contamination during welding and cooling. Our certified welders use argon purging and trailing shields to ensure aerospace-quality welds with full penetration and no embrittlement.

What thicknesses can you fabricate?

We work with titanium sheets from 0.4mm to 12mm thickness. Our equipment handles the full range of gauges for different applications. For thicker material requirements, we can fabricate titanium plate up to 25mm thickness with appropriate lead times.

Do you provide material certifications?

Yes, we provide complete material traceability including mill certificates, chemical composition analysis, mechanical property test results, and heat lot documentation. All material meets ASTM specifications with full compliance documentation required for aerospace and medical applications.

Can titanium be anodized for color?

Yes, titanium anodizing creates oxide layers producing various colors without dyes or coatings. Colors range from bronze to blue, purple, and gold based on voltage levels. This process enhances corrosion resistance while providing color coding for identification or aesthetic purposes.
